Sarnath:

Sarnath is a district located 10 km north-east of the sacred city Varanasi on the riverside of Ganges River in UP, India.

The Dhammekh Stupa is well known as the place where Gautama Buddha preached the First Sermon to his companions with the teachings of the Dharma. The Mulagandha Kuty Vihara is standing at the eastside of the Dhammekh Stupa.

This introduces information related to the master artist Kosetsu Nosu and the preservation project of the mural at the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara in both English and Japanese.  I have been one of the members of the Society of honoring the master artist Kosetsu Nosu, the site was started to support the project indirectly. The preservation works have been successfully completed in December 2022, then the role of the site is naturally concluded. However, it will be continued to supply related information and respond to inquiries in English.   All responsibility for the site rests with Mr. Miyahara as before.

Who's Kosetsu Nosu?

At the  Buddhism temple in the holy site of Sarnath, Varanasi, India, there is a grand 4 meter high, 44 meter long wall painting of the Life of Buddha. The murals were painted and completed by Japanese artist Nosu Kosetsu in 1936,  about 84 years ago.

What's the Society?

In 2016, the Society was founded in the home-town of Kosetsu Nosu to preserve  murals that have deteriorated over times with the Japanese Technology for the cultural property preservation in order to take over the spirit of this Japanese master artist.

The Murals were painted in the Japanese Traditional Style, not in the Fresco Style of Europe.  Therefore,  after studying the conditions of murals carefully, the Society has determined to carry out preventing peeling of murals by Japanese Technology for the cultural property preservation.
